|Message from Mayor Debbie Amaroso|
Dear Citizens and Friends of Sault Ste. Marie
As Mayor of this great City and with the members of City Council, I look forward to 2012 when we will mark the 100th anniversary of the Incorporation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie. On April 16, 1912, an Act to Incorporate the City of Sault Ste. Marie was passed by His Majesty King George V, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, incorporating the Town of Sault Ste. Marie into the City of Sault Ste. Marie.
This historic event in Sault Ste. Marie was greatly overshadowed on April 15, 1912 when the RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean. It was not until August 1912 when the Duke of Connaught, Governor General of Canada visited, that our newly incorporated City was officially recognized.
I am very excited to announce that on April 16, 2012, a special anniversary meeting of City Council will be held at which time City Council will officially recognize our 100th Anniversary as a City. More details will follow as to how all Saultites can celebrate this historic date.
We as citizens of this City have much to be proud of in our 100 years of history. Algoma Steel Corporation was created in 1912; the Sault Star began a daily publication and was renamed the Sault Daily Star; the Marconi Society was established. During the ensuing decades, the City grew and prospered; many family businesses were established and flourished, schools and hospitals were built, transportation expanded, malls were built, the list of community progress is endless and continues to this day.
Our City and its citizens have a great deal to celebrate on the occasion of our 100th anniversary. To commemorate the year, City Council has established a Celebrate 100! Team comprised of elected officials and municipal staff who will coordinate a community celebration throughout the year. Special features will include this website for the purpose of promoting all events; those that take place annually and some unique to Celebrate 100!. All community groups are invited to consider hosting an event that will showcase the anniversary year. 2012 will be a year to celebrate our accomplishments of the last 100 years. Let’s all celebrate! We are going to have a good time!
On behalf of the members of City Council and as Mayor of the City of Sault Ste. Marie, it gives me great pleasure to invite the citizens of Sault Ste. Marie, along with their friends and families who live elsewhere to come home, for all to join in Celebrate 100!
