Posted by admin on 2013/1/24 14:41:13 (122 reads)

The August 29-30, 2012 visit to Sault Ste. Marie by Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada and Mrs. Sharon Johnston was a very special time for City Council and the residents of Sault Ste. Marie. The visit was a once in a lifetime experience for all involved. It was a great honour to have Their Excellencies preside over a ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie. The ceremony took place at the Civic Centre 100th Anniversary Flower Garden. A legacy commemorative plaque adjacent to the garden reads:

City of Sault Ste. Marie 100th Anniversary Flower Garden and Commemorative Plaque

On April 16, 1912 an Act to incorporate the City of Sault Ste. Marie was passed by the Provincial Legislature. A century later the city remains an important commercial and industrial centre with a vibrant cultural mix of 75,000 residents.

The 100th anniversary flower garden and commemorative plaque are dedicated to the people of the City of Sault Ste. Marie – past, present and future.

Dedication ceremony presided by Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston Governor General of Canada and Mrs. Sharon Johnston – August 29, 2012.

Additionally, two commemorative benches are features of the legacy garden to be enjoyed by all citizens for years to come - engraved with wording which reads:

In Honour of the Visit of Their Excellencies the Honourable David Johnston Governor General of Canada and Mrs. Sharon Johnston
August 29, 2012.

Story:
Year 1901-02 eight young men immigrated to Saults Ste. Marie ON / MI from a small Parkano village, Finland. My grandfather Alexander ALAKIRJANEN was one of them, but he came back to Finland later and built a farm and had 10 children. Grandfather's brother Oscar b1874 and Victor b 1876 ALAKIRJANEN and cousins Manasse b1874, Nestor b1877, Hiskias b1879 and Viktor b 1883 YLIKIRJANEN moved to Soo. Have you heard about them? They wrote maybe their familyname briefly KIRJANEN.
Happy 100 anniversary. Best regards!
