The August 29-30, 2012 visit to Sault Ste. Marie by Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada and Mrs. Sharon Johnston was a very special time for City Council and the residents of Sault Ste. Marie. The visit was a once in a lifetime experience for all involved. It was a great honour to have Their Excellencies preside over a ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie. The ceremony took place at the Civic Centre 100th Anniversary Flower Garden. A legacy commemorative plaque adjacent to the garden reads:

On April 16, 1912 an Act to incorporate the City of Sault Ste. Marie was passed by the Provincial Legislature. A century later the city remains an important commercial and industrial centre with a vibrant cultural mix of 75,000 residents. The 100th anniversary flower garden and commemorative plaque are dedicated to the people of the City of Sault Ste. Marie – past, present and future. Dedication ceremony presided by Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston Governor General of Canada and Mrs. Sharon Johnston – August 29, 2012.
Additionally, two commemorative benches are features of the legacy garden to be enjoyed by all citizens for years to come - engraved with wording which reads:
